Ropecon 2013 tournament

 photo con6.jpg

This weekend's 4-round tournament is behind us and I snatched a couple of pictures from it. Here's a brief recap. I played my sm/tau. Attack bikes, some ordnance, a broadside bomb with ninja commander and a riptide.

 photo con1.jpg

Round 1 was against a fairly new player. He was playing tau with some deep striking crisis suits, a riptide, longstrike and a lot of fire warriors. We were playing Big guns never tire and he got first turn. It ended on t5, he had his suit commander left. 13-0 victory.

 photo con2.jpg

Round 2 was against Roni. He had just whooped our Captain's nids with his Crons. Double wraiths with d-lords, 4 scyhtes, 2 a-barges, bastion and some immortals to camp the comms. We were playing purge the alien with vanguard strike. Turkhey shoot, although he got first turn. My broadsides picked a target and destroyed it. T1 it was slay the warlord, first blood and 2 killpoints from one wraith squad. Then the second squad, 2 scythes, a-barges and the last scythes. The deployment allowed me to just shoot everything. I think I won 11-5.

 photo con3.jpg

 photo con4.jpg

Round 3 was against ovv and his Tau. Suit commander with crisis suits forming a markerlight/ignores covers squad, broadsides in bastion, 2 skyrays, 2 riptides, 2 devilfish but very light on troops. It was emperor's will and relic. He won the roll of to go first and I was back to camping in a corner :D. T1 he got one attack bike squad (broadsides were out of markerlight and thus ignores cover range). I reacted by destroying both devilfish and all but 1 of the 12 fire warriors inside. Next ovv would shoot my broadsides and riptide but I would react by killing the fire warriors ontop of his bastion (suit commander + hb attack bikes ftw). The most epic moment was when my multimeltas exploded his bastion, killing the broadsides inside!!!! I had been very slow with my deployment and the game ended on t4. I should have checked ranges to the objectives the turn before but since I hadn't I didn't make it to either of the emperor's will markers. Tau win with first blood 2-1.

 photo con7.jpg

Final round was against Antti and his Necrons. Crusade with 5 objectives was the worst mission for me. Antti played it very well, giving me little targets until t4 when his flyers came on and nuked my troops. Silly me was too preoccupied with keeping my characters in the broadside bomb, fearing the wraith, when they should have been tanking/giving ld to my troops. My large kroots also came on the wrong side of the board despite rerolls and were left in the breeze behing Antti's entire army (the game had turned from vanguard strike into hammer and anvil at some point). When I contested objectives on t5, I had to shoot one warrior squad off of an objective. Cryptek stood back up and the game was a tie. Secondaries for me, one objective for Antti, 3-3.

 photo con8.jpg

So overall I came in at 10/38. Still alright but I'm kinda dissappointed with the mistakes I made day 2. Not to take anything away from my opponents, but I shouldn't be making careless mistakes. Ofcourse 2 tight games and 2 major victories would have been better at a battlepoint event or the etc. Ropecon had victory points as a tie breaker but was WDL.

Finally, our team's necron player, Frenzy, had worked up his space sharks for ropecon and they were looking great. Had to use a flash so it doesn't give credit to the painting, but look at that display board!

Final preparations for 40k tournament and Ropecon 2013

 photo tyoumlpoumlytauml.jpg

Since my workday only lasted 3 minutes today, I was left with plenty of time to go home and finish my SM/TAU. My apartment has been invaded by piles of minis for the last couple of weeks (that's actually a lie, my apartment is always filled with miniatures :D). As often is the case, I've been working hard to get comissions out of the way and was left with little time for my own minis, having to cut some corners. Overall, the army isn't bad. I might come back to some things once the new sm book comes out (or after the etc).

The Broadisde bomb

I'm really looking forward to the weekend. Ropecon is a chance to meet up with a lot of my friends (not only wargamers but other kinds of nerds aswell). The tournament is a last chance to practice with my etc list in a tourney setting (although I think we're having one more training weekend before flying off to Serbia). Ropecon is also a real melting pot for gamers and hobbyists. there are some real eye candy armies in the tournaments. I've heard that Frenzy from over at Warhead has completed his Space Sharks, which will be awesome to see, and a long time FB player who paints really pretty armies has worked up an IG project. I'm sure there'll be lots of other armies to look forward to (sorry Joonas, not yours).

Attack bikes, maxed out. Including one that is older than I am.

Everybody have a nice weekend!

Tau Hammerheads; 1850 new tau list

Photobucket

Most people online believe that there is a 'default' heavy support layout for all tau armies. Theses default builds aren't always even the same. Some believe in double railheads, some in only broadsides. First off I'm going to say, there is never a default build. Tau have a good chance of customising their suits, and IMO you can play a wide variety of HS layouts, as long as the rest of the list balances different aspects out.

For a long time I just simply ignored the railhead. What I saw was a railgun, and I saw that broadsides do it better. Ofcourse, that is still true. However, the main reason why people tend to take the hammerhead, is for the big template. Horde control, which is traditionally an achilles heel to tau lists.

Against a horde army, and a good player, the models will be so stretched out that infact you aren't getting a lot under the template. The Hammerhead is nice to have against hordes, but there is a list type against which it excells even more. That is against mechanised lists.

This is especially against lists that don't go msu, but have large squads (the best example is Space Wolves with large grey hunter squads). Your chances of exploding a rhino are bigger then just wrekcing it, with railguns. If you do explode a rhino, it is very likely that these 8-9 -man squads will be left in a nice clump. That is where the hammerhead excells. Firing at these demeched squads, forcing wounds so that your army can cope with the amount of 3+ saves (especially since so many tau lists don't utilise plasma anymore).

The Hammerhead is also adaptable, it has two firing modes. This makes it capable of dealing with mech and infantry. However, often people forget that so do broadsides. They have SMS. This doesn't mean that the two firing modes are a bad thing on the hammerhead, just simply that that shouldn't be the reason you take a hammerhead. The reason you take it is for the big blast. It forces your opponent to spread out and punishes any squads that are left clumped. The anti-tank round is really for those bad rounds of shooting where you didn't manage to drop enough tanks.

How many should I have then? Many people seem to advocate 2 hammerheads and 3 broadsides. I personally think two squads of broadsides is better. This means you can fire at 4 targets (when your team leader has a target lock). I think railguns really form the backbone of Tau antitank. Crisis suits can surpress, but you need something to knock those tanks out for good. That's where broadsides are needed. Thus I will be trying out this list next:

Shas’el with burst cannon, missile pod and multitracker @ 75pts.

1 XV8 Shav’re Bodyguard with burst cannon, missile pod, targeting array and hardwired multitracker @ 70pts.

Shas’el with burst cannon, missile pod and multitracker @ 75pts.

1 XV8 Shav’re Bodyguard with burst cannon, missile pod, targeting array and hardwired multitracker @ 70pts.

2 XV8 Crisis Suits with burst cannons, missilepods and multitrackers @ 100pts.

2 XV8 Crisis Suits with burst cannons, missilepods and multitrackers @ 100pts.

2 XV8 Crisis Suits with burst cannons, missilepods and multitrackers @ 100pts.

6 Firewarriors with pulse rifles @ 60pts.

10 Kroot Carnivores @ 70pts.

10 Kroot Carnivores @ 70pts.

10 Kroot Carnivores @ 70pts.

4 Pathfinders @ 48pts.

Devilfish with disruption pods @ 85pts.

Piranha with fusion blaster, targeting array, disruption pods @ 75pts.

Piranha with fusion blaster, targeting array, disruption pods @ 75pts.

3 XV88 Broadside Battlesuits with advanced stabilization systems, incl. team leader with hardwired drone controller, 2 gun drones and hardwired target lock @ 270pts.

3 XV88 Broadside Battlesuits with advanced stabilization systems, incl. team leader with hardwired drone controller, 2 gun drones and hardwired target lock @ 270pts.

Hammerhead Gunship with railgun, two burstcannons, disruption pods and multitracker @ 165pts.

Total @ 1848pts.

I haven't tried the burstcannon/missilepod/multitracker layout in squads of 2, it might not work well enough in suppression and I'll switch out for twin-missiles and flamers. I just like the amount of torrent that the burst cannons bring for a cheap price. Anti-tank should be pretty solid with a couple of meltas, 6 broadsides and potentially the hammerhead. Scoring is fine and I like the fact that my crisis suits are divided into 5 squads. losing the ethereal is a blow, because my ld drops pretty dramatically, but we'll just have to see how this list does.

Tau Battlesuit equipment options

Photobucket

The fireknife (plasma/missile/multitracker) suit configuration seems to be almost every tau commanders favorite option. I for one believed that the most versatile configuration would fit best in any tau list. In the new broadside list I've been working on, I tried out some other configurations.

When I playtested the burst cannon/missilepod/multitracker suits I was very surprised. In general, most sources will say that burst cannons on suits is crap. Those suits however, were on fire. I decided to crunch some numbers. It turns out the burst cannons are better then the fireknives at MEQs in cover when allowed into their "optimal" range of 13"-18". And the squad costed 36 points less.

This post isn't really about trying to sell burst cannons to you (although chainguns are freaking awesome!), but to motivate you to try different options. The broadside list I'm playing doesn't deploy its crisis suits, and thus needs to provide enough firepower in a couple of shooting phases. Fireknives are so effective because they are flexible, and can provide weight of fire at range that should over the course of the game destroy enemies. They wouldn't fit aswell into a list that utilises a positional relay,

Crisis suits are some of the most flexible options in the game, and every commander should look at the rest of their list to decide what kind of suits to take.

1750pts. Tau Broadside list, v.2

Photobucket

Played a game with this list versus Grey Knights. The ATC mission system requires getting used to and there are things that I would now do differently. However, I played a draw (winning on kp, drawing bases and losing loot counters) and was pretty happy with the concept. The list just lacked anti-infantry firepower. I might just end up taking fireknives, but I'm going to try out a burstcannon+missilepod+multitracker configuration, because that allows me to take the full 9 crisis suits and upgrade my shasel with some actual weapons. This list should deal with infantry a lot better, at 18'' but even at 36''.

A lot of players swear by 'quantity over quality' on anti-infantry firepower, and this list will try whether that holds true with Tau. I also decided to try more kroot instead of the second firewarrior squad. I am unsure which option would be better, but I'll give the kroot a spin.

Shas'el with airbursting fragmentation projector, target lock, positional relay, bonding knife @ 95pts.

3 Crisis suits with burst cannons, missile pods and multi-trackers @ 150pts.

3 Crisis suits with burst cannons, missile pods and multi-trackers @ 150pts.

3 Crisis suits with burst cannons, missile pods and multi-trackers @ 150pts.

6 Firewarriors @ 60pts.
Devilfish with disruption pods @ 85pts.

10 Kroot Carnivores @ 70pts.

10 Kroot Carnivores @ 70pts.

10 Kroot Carnivores @ 70pts.

3 Broadsides with advanced stabilisation systems, leader with 2 shield drones, bonding knife and hard-wired target lock @ 285pts.

3 Broadsides with advanced stabilisation systems, leader with 2 shield drones, bonding knife and hard-wired target lock @ 285pts.

Tailoring lists or countering the meta? Tau armylist

Photobucket

In your opinion, wherein lies the difference? Meta is a word that many gamers avoid, and imo we first need to define meta. For me, meta means characteristics that are (almost) universally found in armylists at a given time in a given place. I think it would be safe to say, that mech is a strong characteristic of most armies in 5th edition. There is the counter to the trend, horde armies, which have done well at times, but as grey knights become more popular, purifiers will begin to pose a serious problem. At the very least, there is a good chance that horde lists will get knocked out of the competition in the first rounds by Grey Knight players.

Grey Knights require a lot of dedicated anti-tank firepower (preferably with ap1) to take out, meanwhile hordes laugh at that. The question really is, how much are you ready to emphasise antitank and anti-MEQ to help against GK and other marine armies (which are very common).

One of the largest tournaments in Finland is being held at the end of July, and of course I need to start thinking of a list to take there. The tournament might be running ATC-style missions, meaning that there are three objectives (killpoints, 3 obj, bases) each worth 10 battlepoints to the winner (giving a possible max of 30 points). Draw in a win-con is worth points, and a loss 0 points.

Dark Eldar would have serious problem with scoring points from the killpoints department. So, we need a list that can consistently win on objectives and killpoints, is capable of taking 3 objectives (winning objectives 2-1 and at least tying bases), and should be good against the most likely opponents, which is mech and MEQ. I want a list that can really go up against grey knights.

Is this list tailored, or designed taking in mind the current meta?

Repainting my tau

Photobucket

I thought it would be fun to repaint my tau army. Here are the first models. Unfortunately, the flash makes the suits hard to make out, but I just couldn't get a focused pic without the flash. Any tips?

1750pts. Foot Based Tau Army

Photobucket

My Tau army has always been slightly odd. It has all the elements of a generic tau netlist, but it has a couple points that probably stand out as odd.

I really don't understand why people don't like ethereals. I've always played one in my Tau armies, and especially when you are using drones as ablative wounds, being able to reroll ld is a huge buff. I usually just put the ethereal in a kroot unit if up against a shooty opponent, and into some broadsides if my kroots are needed bubblewrapping.

Another lovely toy I've found in the codex is seeker missiles on piranhas. The problem with seekers is that you need 2 markerlights to reliably set off 1 seeker missile. It's pretty expensive. Still, the ability to fire it even while moving flat out and ingoring all terrain but smoke launchers etc. and firing on bs5 make it great imo. I usually zoom the piranhas up on t1 and fire the seekers, hoping to get a nice side shot on stuff like vindicators and predators.

Finally ofcourse we come to the 'weird' looking broadsides. Why would somebody play broadsides without ASS? Well, when you have 3x2 movement isn't as important, you can just deploy them in overlapping lanes of fire, and the extra twin-linked plasma is really good when you need to kill the guys pouring out of those transports. I've personally found the configuration I use on my broadsides to be very effective, especially with the amount of marine armies, or armies including high t models, out there.

Originally I was just planning on posting up my latest Tau list, but this turned into a rather lengthy post where I try to defend the choices I have made. Feel free to state your opinion. Is this list crap? What would you change?

1.5k Tau @ tourney Game 4 vs Black Templars

Hi,

I forgot to video tape this game, so I'll just illustrate how the game went with some Vassal images. You can click the images to enlargen them. My armylist can be found here. His list was something like this:

Marshal with termie command squad and 2 assault cannons

Emperors champion with abhor the witch

5 termies with 2 assault cannons

2x dread with twin-linked lascannon and missile launcher

3x 5 man crusader squads with lascannons and meltaguns (I think one squad had a plasma instead of meltagun)

2x auto-las predator

We were playing for table sixths, which were held with scoring units and contested with any units, with a pitch battle deployment. I go first and deploy across my deployment zone. Ethereal goes into the kroots and devilfishes go into reserve.

He deploys one crusader squad into each tablesixth on his side of the table, but he focuses his forces onto my left flank. He decides to play a refused flank.

He than steals the initiative!

Turn 1

He blasts some gun drones from my bigger broadside unit and kills one of the crisis suits on my left flank.

I start withdrwing onto my right flank. The plan is to ignore the termies. If I can move out of the way, they won't do much, and if I shoot at them th
ey'll close in faster. The lone crisis suit on my left flank takes a side shot at one of the predators. The crisis team on the right flank moves up to threaten the crusade squad, who are very alone on that flank. I blow off the lascannon from the centre dread.

Turn 2

He kills off the crisis suit on the left flank, continues to shoot the broadsides in the centre bringing them down to the leader. One of the crisis suits on the right flank is killed. The remaining suit takes cover in the trench system, within striking distance of the crusaders.

I continue to fall back with my kroots, but my shooting only manages to destroy a lascannon and immobilise the centre dread.

Turn 3:

His termies finish off the last broadside and shooting switches to the command suit team.

The flamer fails to kill anyone from the crusader squad on the right flank, and my shooting fails to harm his preds/dreads. One of my devilfishes arrives, I bring it on my right flank.

Turn 4:

He kills off the crisis suit on the left flank, his lascannons are out of range, and his termies try to kill some kroots.

The last devilfish fails to arrive! The devilfish that is on the table, drives up to the middle of the field, where it eventually is immobilised, so that the fire warriors and gun drones can move into any sixth to contest/hold. I try to shoot the crusaders on the right flank, my plan is to claim the sixth with my fire warriors, claim the bottom right sixth with the kroots and contest one of his sixths with gun drones.

Turn 5:

My opponent realises he wont be able to kill the Kroots, and thus can't take away the sixth they are holding. With his shooting he kills the crisis command squad and immobilizes the devilfish.

The last devilfish arrives on my turn. I drive it up on the very left flank, and disengage the drones, I'm hoping to contest his last sixth with some good run moves. They fall a couple of inches short. In the centre the firewarriors disembark to shoot at the crusaders in the top right sixth and are themselves contesting it. The drones disengage from the devilfish and move to contest the central top sixth. I shoot at the crusaders in the top right corner and bring them down to one marine. At the moment it's a draw

The game goes on

Turn 6:

His shooting is concentrated at the gun drones and fire warriors. He kills the drones in the centre but only manages to kill one from the left flank. His remaining crusader moves up to charge the fire warriors which are shot down to 3 warriors. Both fail to do anything in combat. He disengages the Emperor's champion from one of the termie squads and leaves it to contest the bottom left sixth.

On my turn the devilfish moves up and the fire warriors disembark. The lone drone contests the upper left sixth. The fire warriors rapid fire and kill the Emperor's champion! My luck turns even better when the three firewarriors kill the marine in combat and the game ends!

Summary:

I think he made a bad move in deploying his termies on my far left flank. Their range is only 24" and they should be deployed centrally where they have the best coverage. Because he tried to refused flank me I was able to ignore the termies, and I managed to get away with the horrible shooting I had in the first couple of turns. Still the game really came down to some lucky rolling on my part, and unlucky rolling on his part, as I pushed ahead on turn six to have 3 sixths to his 1. He's a great guy, and I've played against, and lost against him before. I really admire the armylist He's managed to get out of the Templar codex at 1500 points, eventhough I myself play a termispam with my Templars.

Talking of termispam, I painted some more termies for my Templars and have been playtesting 4 termisquads at 1500 points. So far I've gone 4-0-0, stay tuned for some pics and maybe some thoughts on why the templar termispam works so well.

VIDEO: 1.5k Tau vs. Dark Angels

Here's my third game at the tourney I went to with my 1.5k Tau list. The list can be found here.
I enjoyed this game, although the fact that you couldn't take special characters at the tourney hurt my opponent. He was a loyal Dark Angels player however, and decided to keep with the outdated codex.

I'm sorry that it's been taking me some time to get through these videos.

Video: 1.5k Tau @ tourney Game 2

Alright here's the second video battle report from my 5-game tournament. I played against a dreadmob list. My army list can be seen in this post.

I enjoyed the game, eventhough I lost. This was probably the right game to lose, since the Ork player went on to win the tournament.

VIDEO: 1.5k Tau @ tourney game 1

Hi,
I finally got my first video done. I'm up against (almost fully) mech-guard in annihilation.

I enjoyed the game, and my opponent was a good player. I think he was going to be attending the ETC-tournament as a member of team-Finland. I made mistakes, but luckily I still managed to pull out a win.

Here's my list which was affected by restrictions (not allowed to take 2 same kinds of HQs or 3 same kinds of elites, fast attack or heavy support:
